Guest Speaker, Author Tom Jacobs ’77, ’78: Buy Stocks on Sale, Avoid the Blow Ups

Join us on Tuesday, December 4th at 7pm to learn the principles of successful value-based stock market investing from noted financial author and value investing expert, Tom Jacobs Arts ’77, Grad ’78.

In his one-hour presentation, Tom will teach you:

  • How to buy stocks “on sale”
  • The principles of value investing
  • How to avoid the blow ups
  • 10 earnings quality red flags
  • 4 clear examples of the best predictors

After which we’ll save time for Q&A and meeting the author and your fellow alums.

Please click here to register now.

About Tom Jacobs Arts ’77, Grad ’78:

Tom Jacobs bought his first shares of stock in 1968 and has been investing ever since. Raised with his parents’ experience of the Crash and Great Depression, he concentrates on managing risk through opportunistic value, special situations, and–thanks to co-author John Del Vecchio–earnings quality in a long-short portfolio.

He and John Del Vecchio wrote What’s Behind the Numbers? A Guide to Exposing Financial Chicanery and Avoiding Huge Losses in Your Portfolio believing strongly in the importance of risk management, avoidance of loss, and the importance of both value investing on the long side and earnings quality on the short side. The book provides clear, specific ways for investors of all levels to use the best predictors of poor stock performance to avoid wealth-destroying blowups.

While most investors focus on the blue skies, Tom and John focus on the ground beneath their feet. Instead of chasing the market’s latest growth darling until it ends badly, they seek to avoid potential loss from management manipulation of financials to show things as better than they are.

Tom is currently portfolio manager and lead advisor of Motley Fool Special Ops, an investment service employing the book’s strategies. He also is managing partner of Complete Growth Investor, LLC, a holding company, and principal of The Marfa Group, Inc.

He received his BA cum laude and MAT from Cornell University.
